The Fly Geyser and how to visit this geothermal oddity.

The Yellowstone National Park has quite a few crazy natural features and cool formations. But visitors agree that none of them is quite like Fly Geyser, also known as the Fly Ranch Geyser.

People from all over the world including scientists have come over to take a look and take samples. It is located in Washoe County, Nevada, near the edge of Fly Reservoir in the Hualapai Geothermal Flats.

How was it Formed?

In 1964, the land was being drilled in search of sources of geothermal energy. When the drilling was over and wells were being capped, there was one that was not capped correctly or probably not capped at all.

Dissolved minerals began to bubble up to the top of the well creating the strange formation it has now. Nothing has made this formation stop; in fact, several inches are added every year to the pillars.

Characteristics

The Fly Geyser has surreal pillars of unusual colorations. These bright colors are caused by thermophilic algae and minerals. It is approximately 1.5 m (5 ft) high and 3.7 m (12 ft) wide.

The jets of water can reach more than 5 feet in the air. The Fly Geyser is not the only one in the vicinity. There are others that were formed from other drilling projects.

How to Visit

This majestic natural phenomenon is located on private property.  The Black Rock Desert Tours no longer have access to it. The Bruno's Country Club is said to be able to get you in touch with the owners.

If you cannot get past the gate, you can still spy the oddity from the road with binoculars.
